Well, it’s summer time! If you’re kicking it in AK you know what that means: the state bird is out and on the prowl for blooood… yep, it’s mosquito season, and I’m taking full advantage of these beauties!
I started my series “Happy Little Things” in early 2017 as a kind of joke. I was having a solo show, and wanted to do something odd, something different. I wanted to make art of something that wasn’t art, and especially something that people didn’t like. I remembered my goal from years ago to make a painting with real dead mosquitoes stuck in the paint, and thought “AHA”! I grabbed up a bunch of tiny canvases and set to work.
Thus, my obsession set in. I don’t know what it is exactly… their legs are delicate, and remind me of the fairies I drew obsessively in high school. The blood splatter is shocking, and fun to create.
I’ll admit, I do enjoy seeing these critters dead, and it seems like people get it. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who hasn’t at some point squished a mosquito on the wall and left it there as a morbid warning for the others.
For me, this series is more than just dead bugs. Every squished mosquito is so satisfying, and one more crushed goal. They’re all a little (or not so little) bastion of success… and I giggle when I hear of all the double-takes people do when they realize it’s a painting.
When I look at these paintings, I smile and think “yep, I’m crushing it!”
This year I’m doing more with these little bugs. Tomorrow I’m setting up my first vendor booth as Aisling Meehan Artworks, and it’s all about the mosquito goodness! I challenged myself to come up with some new takes on the bugs, and made prints from hand-cut blocks. I don’t often take on print-making, but I was inspired by seeing the work of my rad friend Devante Owens, and decided to have a go at it.
Making the prints was really satisfying, and I hope people share some giggles sending out some ‘skeeter love with these hand-printed cards!
I’m also rolling out lapel pins, magnets, necklaces, new paintings, and coloring pages.
Am I the crazy mosquito lady? Perhaps! But it doesn’t BUG me one bit!
Have an artful day!
