We did it! Operation Star Wars was a success, and what a day it was. It was incredible to see so many people gathered in the love of this galaxy far, far away. The Alaska Center for Natural Medicine did one heck of a job putting on this hooplah and art show, and the AK501st garrison was a hoot and a half. Obviously, nobody was in any danger of blaster injury.
Part of why I love Star Wars so much is because it’s so accessible. If you just want a cool movie with “lasers and explosions, you get that. If you want something with depth and history, you get that too, and sense its debut in 77, fans have gone hog wild expressing their admiration for the franchise.
I jumped on this show because it was something different, something I like, and a challenge.Every painting was a chance to play, and examine my own relationship to these characters.
Some, like my portrait of Darth Vader titled “Time Just Got Away From Me” took ages to paint. I would tie myself in knots trying to think of how to proceed. My painting of C3PO telling a story to the ewoks, titled “God’s Retelling of That Time We All Heard An Explosion In Space” was the third I started, and the last one I finished. On the other hand, after spending a couple days stretching and priming the massive 48x60” canvas, JarJar Binks came together in a day, and was quickly titled “Slay Me With Your Golden Gaze.”
Regardless of how fast I finished a piece, or how many knots I tied myself in over them, people were incredibly sweet about all of the work in the show. It was fun to connect with people and see these paintings through their eyes for a bit, as well as hear about their own art and projects. There was such an amazing range of artists displaying their work, from experienced and established to first-timers.
If you weren’t able to make it out to First Friday on May the 4th, all of the artwork will be on display for several months. Make your way down to the Alaska Center for Natural Medicine to take a gander!
So what’s next?
I’ll be setting up a booth at the 2nd ave Block Party next Thursday, just in time for the start of mosquito season! Hopefully I’ll see you there!
